Wedg-a-licious

Ah, the age-old question... Wedge, bob or a-line?

Okay, this might be a silly hairdresser kind of thing, but its still a valid question. When someone comes in asking for a new hairstyle and it has to be short, there are a few questions I usually ask.

1. How much time do they spend on their hair? (Of course this also depends on their hairtype.) Not a lot of time in the morning usually means the a-line is out. Unless they have super straight hair that's a little coarse.

2. Are they more sassy or more conservative? Playfull or demure? Usually, and this should go without saying, these are not things to ask your client... Just ask yourself these questions and maybe ask about their lifestyle.

3. Have they ever had hair that short before? Sounds silly, but its a necessary question! A layered bob is a less dramatic option than an a-line or a wedge.

4. What's prompting the change? Breakup, funeral, friend's or ex's wedding? Emotionally driven drastic change is a BAD idea...

Coffee fueled cleaning

House cleaning is a misnomer in my home. With a little bit of imagination and a little bit of coffee, I can organize and pile and, in some unfortunate cases, horde with the best of them.

Trying to find a healthy balance between things that I actually need and perceive that I might need in the future has been one of the things that I've struggled with my entire life. How does one put a value on future use?

There is something to be said for the spartan lifestyle. Actually, its one of the things that I admire in my fiance, Sean. He has the ability to put things in a bag and throw them away. I have a collection of small bric-a-brak from my life that I cannot seem to bear even the thought of letting go.

Sure, things happen. New jobs, new venues, new opportunities, births, deaths, mortages, loans, sculptures, stories, capers and more... but for some reason, I have trouble throwing away things that really aren't important. Why do I need to keep certain things and can live without calling the important people in my life?

Maybe things don't let you down? There is no way for a book to break your heart, is there? At least, not by sitting on the shelf collecting dust. There is always the possibility for heartbreak or distrust or horrible catastrophe with people.

I think that the same reason I enjoy doing hair and the whole cosmetology thing is because, in small doses and for short periods of time, I can be a positive influence on how a person feels about the world and their place in it. I can make people feel beautiful, if even for a moment, and I don't have to worry about them hurting me.

Wedding at the Marshdale

So, this was the first wedding of my new freelance endeavor. Not my first wedding, but the first of my Goddess to go career. Very exciting stuff, actually. After the traffic troubles on I-70 coming into Evergreen, I was really worried about getting there on time, so I made sure to leave very early. As it was, I was about an hour early, even after running a couple of errands. But its always good to be prepared, right? Right!

The Meadows at Marshdale is a beautiful wedding venue in Evergreen. www.meadowsatmarshdale.com/

I had a wonderful time with the bride, Katie, her bridal party and her lovely family. Congratulations, you two!!

I'll post more pictures when I get them from the photographer, but in the meantime, here are a few pictures that I took.

Haircuts for everyone!

The only bad part about having a lot of time on my hands is finding things to do during the day that don't involve online games or watching television. Unfortunately, thats what I've been doing a lot of these past few days. That and applying for part time jobs.

After going over my finances and cashing my last check from my former employer, I started reaching out to my fellow professionals and started to test the waters. This led to adding quite a few things to my schedule and made it possible for me to seriously entertain the idea of launching my freelance business in earnest.

This weekend is the Colorado Romance Writers Convention in Denver, which my friend and colleage, Jenn LeBlanc, will be attending. She is an amazing photographer that I've had the joy of working with on several occasions, including quite a few shoots for her illustrated romance novel, "The Rake and the Recluse" (Kindle, paperback, or book website).

Since today is the opening day of the Convention, Jenn had me over for a 'family haircut day' yesterday. Two daughters, her hubby and Jenn herself.

Later today, I'm hoping to do a dry run on a bride whose wedding I'll be working on Saturday. Friday morning is hair and makeup for the winner of Jenn's cover contest (I think that was the name of the contest) and possibly the dry run for my Saturday bride if she doesn't feel up to doing it today. Who knows what Sunday will hold? I'll keep you posted. :D

A new beginning

About seven months ago, I registered Goddess to Go, LLC with the secretary of state in Colorado.

Recently, I set out on a journey of self-discovery and freelance business. Eventually, I plan on opening an Inn with a destination Salon and Spa attached. This blog is basically here to chronicle my adventures in freelance and small business.

Here is my plan, to start out:

1. Get a part time job that has some flexibility, probably retail or something equally flexible with some kind of benefits for their pt people.
2. Survey local businesses to see who would be interested in having me come in and do an employee haircut and/or spa day.
3. In the businesses where I'm invited, I will offer deals and retail sales to the employees for other services and see if I can grow my business through referrals.

I think that if I stay true to myself and work hard that I can make this non-traditional approach work for me. Plus, the flexibility of working this way will also make it possible for me to work on my music career as well. I'm very excited at this prospect, and I have full faith that ultimately, I'm on the right path to finding my place.
